Compare Hosting from sovara to Atlassian Cloud.
SaaS, private cloud, or full on-prem (Docker/Kubernetes) — the customer picks the deployment model, with EU & sovereign infrastructure (incl. STACKIT/IONOS) available across all three, not just the on-prem option. Data residency is contractually fixed rather than merely pinned to a region, and source-code escrow protects against vendor lock-in even for SaaS customers. Not open-source (proprietary, commercial) — the same closed-source status disclosed consistently for YouTrack, easy8 and Phonemos elsewhere in this matrix.
SaaS only — fully managed cloud on AWS. No on-prem/self-host in Cloud (self-hosting needs the separate Data Center product); not open-source. Strong data residency: pin in-scope data to dedicated EU (Frankfurt and Dublin), Germany (Frankfurt), Switzerland (Zurich), UK, plus US/Canada/AU/Japan/Singapore/Korea/India realms — available on Standard/Premium/Enterprise. Caveats: residency is single-region pinning on AWS (not sovereign/air-gapped, US-operated vendor); confirmed out of scope from pinning are user account info, third-party app data, and analytics data (US-hosted) — AI-processing, DevOps and audit-log data are also commonly cited as out of scope, but we could not independently confirm the exact current wording. Switzerland realm lacks the Atlassian Data Lake.
Project / Work Mgmt & PMO and Test Management have not yet been independently fact-checked — treat them as provisional. All other ratings have been.

KEY DIFFERENTIATORS
Replaces both — not half
sovara covers Jira and Confluence in one platform. XWiki and Phonemos are wiki-only; OpenProject, YouTrack and easy8 are work-management-first with a lighter wiki. Only sovara and Atlassian span both domains — and only sovara does it on your terms.
Sovereign while Atlassian leaves on-prem
Atlassian Data Center reaches end-of-life on 28 March 2029 (no new subscriptions from 30 March 2026). Cloud is SaaS-only with managed — not sovereign — data residency. sovara runs as SaaS, private cloud, or fully on-prem in EU/sovereign data centres.
AI-native, with your own model
sovara ships native AI agents and bring-your-own-LLM (self-hosted), so data never leaves your environment. Atlassian DC has no native AI at all — its only AI route uploads your data to Atlassian's cloud — and Cloud's Rovo offers no BYO-LLM.
Open, no lock-in
Open data formats (Markdown/JSON), full REST/CLI export, a guided Jira/Confluence migration, and source-code escrow. Easy in, easy out.
ATLASSIAN'S DILEMMA
DATA CENTER · SELF-MANAGED
Control, but a dead end — and no AI
"End-of-life 28 March 2029; no new subscriptions from 30 Mar 2026, last expansions 2028." Self-hosting with Atlassian has an expiration date.
"No native AI." The only path is the Rovo connector, which syncs your data up to Atlassian's cloud and needs a Cloud plan — breaking the sovereignty DC was chosen for.
CLOUD · SAAS
AI, but no on-prem — and metered
"SaaS only — no self-host." Data residency is managed single-region on AWS, with user, AI, DevOps and audit data out of scope of pinning.
SSO, SCIM and org audit logs are gated behind the paid Atlassian Guard add-on; Rovo AI offers "no bring-your-own / self-hosted model".
sovara gives you both — without the trade-off
Sovereign or fully on-prem and AI-native with your own self-hosted LLM, replacing Jira and Confluence in a single platform, with open data and no lock-in. The successor to Data Center that Cloud isn't.
