KEYNOTE 02

From the Emirates CIO Seat:

Independence to enable Agility and to Innovate Fast

Independence to enable Agility

and Embedded into the Startup Ecosystem to Innovate Fast

While global enterprises raced to hand critical platforms to hyperscalers, Emirates held back — not to play it safe, but to stay fast and agile. Patrick Naef, CIO of the Emirates Group for over 12 years, called it "reducing dependencies and staying in control of our destiny": keeping ownership of Emirates' own data and technology stack so the airline could partner directly with agile startups, rather than wait on a hyperscaler's roadmap.

In this keynote, Patrick shares what that independence actually produced — the innovation bets that failed, the ones that reshaped how the airline ran, and the discipline of tying every technology decision to a real business problem. Drawing on 30 years in the CIO seat at Swissair, SIG, and Emirates, he makes the case that digital sovereignty isn't ideology — it's the fiduciary duty that keeps a business free enough to keep innovating.

KEYNOTE 03

Innovation under Fire –

What businesses can learn from the Swiss Army

Bottom-up innovation in Switzerland's most hierarchical organisation.

The Swiss Army is highly regulated, hierarchical and risk-averse. Yet through InnoBase, ideas from the field become real improvements—proving that innovation can succeed even in the most structured environments.

If innovation works there, every organisation can learn something.
